The Silence of Our Friends Signing
Meet Mark Long, Jim Demonakos, & Nate Powell
Sunday, February 19th at Guzu Gallery

Our Guzu friends next door (okay, we'll admit it - it's us) are hosting a special signing event for The Silence of Our Friends, by Mark Long, Jim Demonakos (Kirby Krackle), and Nate Powell (Swallow Me Whole.) All three of the creators will be here signing the new First Second graphic novel based on a little-known event from the civil rights movement in Houston, 1968.

We're thrilled to have the guys in for a day of discussion, signing, and... why not?... free beer. Don't miss the first ever Guzu Gallery event!

About The Silence of Our Friends: As the civil rights struggle heats up in Texas, two families-one white, one black-find common ground.

This semi-autobiographical tale is set in 1967 Texas, against the backdrop of the fight for civil rights. A white family from a notoriously racist neighborhood in the suburbs and a black family from its poorest ward cross Houston's color line, overcoming humiliation, degradation, and violence to win the freedom of five black college students unjustly charged with the murder of a policeman.

The Silence of Our Friends follows events through the point of view of young Mark Long, whose father is a reporter covering the story. Semi-fictionalized, this story has its roots solidly in very real events. With art from the brilliant Nate Powell (Swallow Me Whole) bringing the tale to heart-wrenching life, The Silence of Our Friends is a new and important entry in the body of civil rights literature.

Last Days of the Sidekick Store
On February 12th, it's curtains!

This is it! The Sidekick Store is about to be closed (for good this time.)

But why? Well, it was originally meant to be a six-month temporary experiment. Fortunately, the owners of the building weren't ready to tear it down yet. So we got an extra year out of the space! But now they're ready, and we haven't found any other locations for the Sidekick. So this is more of an Uncle Ben death, not a Human Torch death. But we're closing it down in a major way.

The Sidekick will be open from February 3rd through February 12th, and every day will have an ADDITIONAL discount! Here's how it breaks down:

  • Friday, Feb 3rd, 10%
  • Saturday, Feb 4th, 20%
  • Sunday, Feb 5th, 30%
  • Monday, Feb 6th, 40%
  • Tuesday, Feb 7th, 50%
  • Wednesday, Feb 8th, 60%
  • Thursday, Feb 9th, 70%

And for the last weekend (Friday, Feb 10th - Sunday, Feb 12th), all items in the Sidekick will be an ADDITIONAL 75% OFF! So on Feb 6th, dollar comics will actually be 60 cents! Toys and t-shirts and graphic novels are discounted beyond their already-discounted prices! There are no saves, so get what you want while you can. Because someone else WILL snap it up at prices like this.

We'll see you at the Sidekick!
And for any further updates, we'll keep you posted at the Sidekick Facebook page.

Ready Player One - Book Signing with author Ernie Cline
Wednesday, August 24, 4 pm to 7 pm

Austin-based author Ernie Cline has expressed his love of pop culture as a spoken-word artist and screenwriter for the 2009 film Fanboys. Now we're thrilled to have him join us for the release of READY PLAYER ONE, his first novel!

Genre-busting, ambitious, and irresistibly charming, READY PLAYER ONE is a jaw-droppingly cinematic debut that features a breathtaking, meticulously imagined world that's simultaneously futuristic and charmingly retro - a universe where light-speed-traveling DeLoreans battle it out with X-Wing fighters and entire planets are inspired by classic video arcades - combined with a plot that incorporates pop-culture esoterica such as Cap'n Crunch commercials, John Hughes movies, and giant Japanese robots.

Brandon says: "Ready Player One features a cameo from almost everything I've ever loved about pop culture, cleverly plugged into a story about the ultimate treasure hunt. It's my new favorite novel!"
